Periodontics (Gum Disease therapy)
The foundation for life-long health of the teeth is controlling periodontitis, or gum disease. Most people that lose their teeth after age 30 do so to gum disease. Steinke & Caruso Dental Care and the hygiene staff take pride in keeping abreast of the latest techniques and technologies in preventing and treating gum disease. Recent studies have linked gum disease to heart disease and Alzheimer's disease, further reinforcing the need to aggressively treat this silent disease. Dr Steinke, Dr. Caruso and the hygiene team take pride in keeping abreast of the latest techniques and technologies in preventing and treating gum disease, including laser therapy. Laser therapy is a quick, pain free way to sterilize the spaces in the gums (pockets) where the bacteria that cause gum disease live.
Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy)
Many times through trauma, cavities, or large old fillings that have leaked, a nerve dies in a tooth. In the past, many teeth were lost when the nerve died, but at Steinke & Caruso Dental Care, we can comfortably and efficiently save teeth through simply removing the infected portion of the tooth with high technology automated techniques. Most people are amazed how easy modern-day root canal therapy can be.
Pedodontics (Children's dentistry)
95% of the young adults that have grown up in the practice over the past 17 years have never had a cavity. At Steinke & Caruso Dental Care, we want the children to look forward to their next opportunity to have fun and to have their teeth sparkle. Through nutrition, sealants, fluoride, and preventive home-care techniques, it is wonderful to have kids come in smiling and leave smiling. Parents are encouraged to come in with the child during the appointment in the relaxed environment.
Dr. Steinke completed a residency in General Dentistry with a focus in Oral-Surgical Techniques. Most of the young adults who do not have room for their Wisdom Teeth have them taken out in the comfortable, relaxed environment of Steinke & Caruso Dental Care's office. Although we strive to keep the teeth naturally in the mouth, there are times when the teeth require removal. Dr. Steinke and Dr. Caruso are well known for their comfortable techniques of tooth extraction if that situation does occur and tooth removal is necessary. Also, most of the young adults who do not have room for their Wisdom Teeth, choose to have them taken out in the comfortable, relaxed environment of Steinke & Caruso Dental Care.
Other surgical treatments such as biopsies or removal of other oral tissue growths can usually be performed in this office. Steinke & Caruso Dental Care also offers Oral Conscious Sedation.
If someone in the practice sustains a traumatic injury to the face or jaw, Dr. Steinke and Dr. Caruso want to be available for immediate care. The doctors carry a pager, #(207) 750-1508, so you can almost always immediately consult them as to the next step. We will see the patient as soon as possible to evaluate and stabilize the injury.
Prosthetics (Crowns and Bridges)
Growing beautiful faces has been one of the most rewarding aspects of Dr. Steinke's 23 years in dental practice. After receiving the award for Exceptional Interest in Orthodontics and Facial Growth in dental school, Dr. Steinke proceeded to take hundreds of hours of continuing education in orthodontics and facial growth focusing on early treatment. By utilizing the body's growth abilities and enhancing the natural growth utilizing comfortable growth appliances, most of the time the child's beautiful smile can be completed before entering high school and without extracting non-replaceable teeth.
Dr. Steinke and Dr. Caruso have studied under many of the best "smile-enhancing" dentists in the country, and has gleaned information from each of them to better enhance your smile. The basis of our entire practice is prevention of disease including cavities, periodontal disease, and cancer. Through nutrition, life style management, smoking cessation, and advanced home care techniques, Dr. Steinke and Dr. Caruso often say that "dentistry is very inexpensive and very comfortable, but sugared sodas, Skittles, smoking, and Altoids are very expensive and very uncomfortable." Nutrition and smoking cessation are paramount in the prevention of dental disease in our office.
More than any area of dentistry, the changes and opportunity of implant therapy are nearly as fast as the changes in computers. Implants are proven to be successful and are becoming more simple and predictable each day. An implant is used when you have lost at least one tooth and desire it to be replaced. Steinke & Caruso Dental Care is increasing their focus and education on both the surgical placement of implants and placing the crown, bridge, or denture on the implant after it has had time to integrate into the bone.
Since Dr. Steinke completed his residency in 1981, he has been performing Oral Conscious Sedation to relax his patients for dental procedures. Both Dr. Steinke and Dr. Caruso have been trained in Oral Conscious Sedation through the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation. Dr. Steinke is one of the few dentists in the country that have achieved Fellowship in the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation.
The advances in medications and monitoring have taken relaxation and sedation dentistry to a new level in the past few years. Previously, only the most fearful patients were offered and utilized oral conscious sedation. Now, the safety and predictability of Triazelam, a medication similar to Valium but with a shorter-acting time in the body and a much better amnesic effect, has combined with Pulse-Oximiter monitoring equipment to allow the use of sedation for many more patients. Now, if you are simply having multiple crowns or a root canal and fillings in one day, taking a simple pill and possibly combining it with Nitrous Oxide analgesia (laughing gas) can change a procedure that one day might lead to a procedure that you not only do not dread, but one that you will barely remember after leaving the office.
